Known for offering the best international forum for the discussion of the latest developments as well as informed debate, every event in the \u2018Breakwaters\u2019 series has ensured that advances in coastal engineering are appropriately highlighted.<\/h6>\n<h6>For a full list of topics and themes please visit the website : <a href=\"https:\/\/breakwaters2021.ice.org.uk\/\">https:\/\/breakwaters2021.ice.org.uk\/<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following several requests for an extension of time to provide abstracts for \u2018Breakwaters\u2019 2021, the Organising Committee have moved the deadline for submission forward by two more weeks to\u00a0<u><strong><em>Monday 17 November.<\/em><\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Submissions are still encouraged as soon as possible ahead of the new deadline, as the review of abstracts received is already underway and this will provide more time for consideration ahead of the conference.<\/p>\n<p>The latest in the quadrennial Breakwaters conference series will be held in Portsmouth, UK, between 13 and 16\u00a0September 2021, with abstracts\u00a0now being requested for consideration.<\/p>\n<p><em>As with previous iterations of Breakwaters, the 2021 event will include a site visit on Thursday 16 September, immediately after the main 3 day conference.\u00a0 Details of this\u00a0will be finalised shortly but please do make a note in your diary!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 2021 edition will\u00a0cover the latest developments across maritime engineering topics from coasts to ports\u00a0and\u00a0waterfronts to\u00a0breakwaters,\u00a0while focusing\u00a0on the\u00a0full spectrum of research and study,\u00a0design, construction and operations.<\/p>\n<p>Given the heightened attention on the\u00a0\u2018climate emergency\u2019,\u00a0next year\u2019s conference will place a big\u00a0focus on how resilience and adaptability is being addressed by the maritime sector.<\/p>\n<p>The two previous conferences both attracted over 400 delegates from more than 40 nations and showcased over 100 papers, while also including \u2018Spotlight on Innovation\u2019 presentations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Appreciating the uncertain and difficult time currently facing prospective delegates from across the world, along with a need to be able to respond to changing circumstances, planning for the conference will also explore a range of different opportunities for remote participation.\u00a0We are aiming for a physical, in-person event in Portsmouth, but in case that is not possible due to Covid-19 restrictions,\u00a0<i>Breakwaters\u00a0<\/i>will take place virtually, or as a hybrid event taking place live but with some online\/virtual content.
