In line with CSCE’s Strategic Direction, Leadership in Sustainable Infrastructure, the Division promotes collaboration and exchange of new ideas and initiatives pertaining to sustainable materials. Serving a dynamic and evolving area of civil engineering, the members of the Division use various avenues to share their expertise and findings with the engineering profession in Canada. Within its mission, the major activities of the Division include (i) organizing international specialty conferences in the area of engineering mechanics/materials, (ii) developing and offering short courses covering specialized topics, (iii) disseminating and sharing knowledge through guest-editing special issues of the Canadian Civil Engineer Magazine, (iv) promoting collaboration between researchers at the national and international levels, and (v) enhancing the engagement of young engineers and engineering students through poster and paper presentations during the specialty conferences.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Areas of Interest” tab_id=”objectives-committee”][vc_column_text]• Cement/Concrete/Asphalt & Asphalt Concrete
• Metal/Alloy/Smart Material
• Timber
• Composites
• Geomechanics[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Division Chair’s Message to all interested CSCE members” tab_id=”1703171909559-99c04638-f9de”][vc_column_text]– What is your technical division?
The Engineering Mechanics and Materials (EMM) Division aims to provide a holistic interdisciplinary platform by providing an accessible and diverse forum for researchers, practicing engineers, and industry representatives working in the area of engineering materials and mechanics. The Division creates an environment that fosters professional growth for young engineers through the development and application of engineering mechanics and sustainable materials and by anticipating and adapting to new challenges that tomorrow’s engineers will face.

– What technical content do we have on this topic?
Within its mission, the major activities of the CSCE EMM Division include (i) organizing international specialty conferences in the area of engineering materials and mechanics, (ii) developing and offering short courses covering specialized topics, (iii) disseminating and sharing knowledge through guest-editing special issues of the Canadian Civil Engineer Magazine and organize panel discussions on hot topics during the international specialty conferences, (iv) promoting collaboration between researchers at the national and international levels, and (v) enhancing the engagement of young engineers and engineering students through poster and paper presentations and best student paper awards during the specialty conferences.

– What is the relationship of this above content to CSCE?
In line with the CSCE Strategic Direction 3, Leadership in Sustainable Infrastructure, the Division promotes the exchange of new initiatives and ideas pertaining to sustainable materials. Serving a dynamic and evolving area of civil engineering, the members of the Division use various avenues to share their expertise and findings with the engineering profession in Canada.

– What is CSCE’s position on this discipline?
The CSCE EMM Division organizes an annual or biennial international specialty conference on engineering mechanics and materials. The 11th International Conference on Engineering Mechanics and Materials will take place June 5–7, 2024, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. In addition, the EMM Division organizes ad hoc international specialty conferences on engineering materials. As part of the international specialty conferences, the EMM Division has championed and conferred student paper awards based on high-quality papers and presentations and panel discussions on hot topics featuring renowned guest speakers.

– What are we doing about it?
The following action items have been undertaken/proposed:
• Circulate a newsletter to disseminate information about activities and send message across to the Engineering Mechanics and Materials engineering community.
• Improve collaboration and cooperation between academia, pertinent industry, and professional bodies, both inside and outside Canada, in matters affecting materials and mechanics engineers.

– How can I as a member get involved?
The EMM Division offers members many ways to get involved. Become an active and integral part of our engineering community and give back to your profession while you build your professional profile and network. Share your questions and solutions with researchers and professionals of Engineering Mechanics and Materials.
